And by its isnad to Muhammad b. Sinan from al-Mufaddal b. `Umar from Abu `Abdillah ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู….

He said: Amir al-Mu’mineen ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู… said: Gabriel met the Prophet ุตู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆุขู„ู‡ and said to him: O Muhammad. He said: I am at your service, O Gabriel. He said: Fulan has cast a spell upon you, and he has placed the spell in the well of Bani fulan. So, send the one who is most trustworthy to you, the greatest in your eyes, the one most like yourself, to the well until he comes to you with the spell. He said: So the Prophet ุตู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆุขู„ู‡ summoned `Ali b. Abi Talib and said: Go to the well, for there is a spell in it that Lubayd b. A`sam the Jew cast upon me. He ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู… said: So I went to fulfill the need of the Messenger of Allah ุตู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆุขู„ู‡. I arrived, and the water of the well looked as if it had been turned to henna from the spell. So I quickly climbed into the well until I reached its end, but I could not feel it (the spell). So those who were with me said: There is nothing, come back up. So I said: No, by Allah, I did not lie, and my self is not like your self – meaning, the Messenger of Allah ุตู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆุขู„ู‡. Then I climbed into it gently, and I brought out a spadix. So I gave it to the Prophet ุตู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆุขู„ู‡ and he said: Open it. So I opened it, and inside the spadix was a piece of the bark of a palm tree, and there was a string with twenty one knots (note: other narrations say that there were eleven knots) upon it. That day, Gabriel ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู… came down to the Prophetย ุตู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆุขู„ู‡ with the mu`awadhatayn. So the Prophet ุตู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆุขู„ู‡ said: O `Ali, recite it upon the string. So every time Amir al-Mu’mineen ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู… recited a verse, a knot would loosen, until it was untied. So Allah ุนุฒ ูˆุฌู„ removed the spell from His Prophet and healed him.

He was asked about the mu`awadhatayn: are they from the Qur’an? So he said: Yes, they are from the Qur’an. They said: Lubayd b. A`sam the Jew cast a spell upon the Messenger of Allah ุตู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆุขู„ู‡, then he planted it in the well of Bani Zurayq. So the Messenger of Allah ุตู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆุขู„ู‡ became ill, and when he went to sleep, two angels came to him. One sat at his head and the other sat as his feet. They informed him of it, and that it was at the bottom of the well of Azwan beneath a rock. So the Messenger of Allah ุตู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆุขู„ู‡ became aware of it, and he sent `Ali ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู…, Zubayr, and `Ammar to it. They emptied the well of water, then they raised the rock and took it out. Inside it was a hair comb and the teeth of a comb, and a string with eleven knots tied to a needle (?). Then these two surahs were revealed, and after every verse was recited, a knot would loosen … And Gabriel came and said: In the name of Allah, which will relieve you of everything that harms you from envy and the evil eye, and Allah ุชุนุงู„ู‰ will heal you. And `A’isha and Ibn `Abbas have narrated about this.

And this is a sign of his ุตู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆุขู„ู‡ truthfulness. How could it be that this illness came from their doing? When Allahย ุนุฒ ูˆุฌู„ gathers the creatures on the Day of Resurrection to cast judgment, He will begin with the children ofย  the polytheists. You caused us to die, and we caused nothing to die. You did not give us a speaking tongue, nor a discerning ear, nor a book that we could read, nor a messenger that we could follow. We do not have knowledge, for You have not taught us. So He ุนุฒ ูˆุฌู„ will say to them: My male and female slaves, if I were to command you to do something, would you do it? Then Allah ุนุฒ ูˆุฌู„ will order it to blow into the faces of the creatures. In Tafsir `Ali b. Ibrahim:

“Say: I seek refuge from the Lord of al-Falaq” (113:1). He said: al-Falaq is a pit in Hell. The people of Hell seek refuge from its heat. It asked Allah for permission to breathe, so He permitted it to breathe, and it ignited Hell. He said: And in that pit there is a case made of fire. The people of that pit seek refuge from the heat of that case; and it is a casket. And in that casket are six from the former people and six from the latter people. As for the six from the former people, they are: (1) the son of Adam who killed his brother, (2) Nimrod who threw Ibrahim into the fire, (3) The Pharaoh of Moses, (4) Samiri, who created the [golden] calf, (5) The one who Judaized the Jews, (6) The one who Christianized the Christians. As for the six from the latter people, they are: (1) The first, (2) The second, (3) The third, (4) The fourth, (5) The leader of the Khawarij, (6) Ibn Muljam. “And from the darkness when it overspreads” (113:3).
