In Thawab al-A`mal: By its isnad from Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: Whomever does not recite qul huwallahu ahad in the five prayers in a day, it is said to him: O slave of Allah, you are not from those who pray.
ูู ู ุฌู ุน ุงูุจูุงู ูู ุญุฏูุซ ุฃุจู ู ู ูุฑุฃูุง ููุฃูู ุง ูุฑุก ุซูุซ ุงููุฑุขูุ ูุฃุนุทู ู ู ุงูุงุฌุฑ ุนุดุฑ ุญุณูุงุช ุจุนุฏุฏ ู ู ุขู ู ุจุงููู ูู ูุฆูุชู ููุชุจู ูุฑุณูู ูุงูููู ุงูุขุฎุฑ
In Majma` al-Bayan: In the hadith of Ubay: Whomever recites it, it is as if he has recited one third of the Qur’an, and he is given ten good deeds for every believer in Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers, and the Last Day there is.
ูุนู ุงูุณ ุจู ู ุงูู ูุงู: ุณุฃู ุงููุจู ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู ุฑุฌูุง ู ู ุฃุตุญุงุจู ููุงู: ูุง ููุงู ูู ุชุฒูุฌุชุูุงู: ูุง ูููุณ ุนูุฏู ู ุง ุฃุชุฒูุฌ ุจู ูุงู: ุฃููุณ ู ุนู ” ูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ “ุูุงู: ุจููุ ูุงู ุฑุจุน ุงููุฑุขูุ ูุงู: ุฃููุณ ู ุนู: ” ูู ูุง ุฃููุง ุงููุงูุฑูู “ุูุงู: ุจูู ูุงู: ุฑุจุน ุงููุฑุขู ูุงู: ุฃููุณ ู ุนู ” ุฅุฐุง ุฒูุฒูุช “ุูุงู: ุจูู ูุงู: ุฑุจุน ุงููุฑุขูุ ุซู ูุงู: ุชุฒูุฌ ุชุฒูุฌ ุชุฒูุฌ
And from Anas b. Malik.
He said: The Prophet ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู asked a man from his companions: O you, have you married? He said: No, I do not have anything (dower) to get married with. He said: Do you not have qul huwallahu ahad? He said: Of course. He said: It is one fourth of the Qur’an. He said: Do you not have qul ya ayyuhal kafirun? He said: Of course. He said: It is one fourth of the Qur’an. Do you not have itha zulzilatu? He said: Of course. He said: It is one fourth of the Qur’an. Then he said: Marry, marry, marry.
ููู ุงูุญุฏูุซ ุงูู ูุงู ููุงู ูุณูุฑุชู ” ูู ูุง ุฃููุง ุงููุงูุฑููุ ููู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ” ุงูู ูุดูุดุชุงู
And in a hadith it is said that qul ya ayyuhal kafirun and qul huwallahu ahad are called “the two dissociating” chapters (i.e. dissociation from polytheism).
ูู ุนููู ุงูุฃุฎุจุงุฑ ุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุฅูู ุนุจุฏ ุงูุนุฒูุฒ ุจู ุงูู ูุชุฏู ูุงู: ุณุฃูุช ุงูุฑุถุง ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ุนู ุงูุชูุญูุฏ ููุงู: ูู ู ู ูุฑุฃ ” ูู ูู ุงููู ” ูุงู ุฑ ุจูุง ููุฏ ุนุฑู ุงูุชูุญูุฏ ููุช: ููู ููุฑุฃูุงุูุงู: ูู ุง ููุฑุก ุงููุงุณุ ูุฒุงุฏ ููู: ูุฐูู ุงููู ุฑุจูุ ูุฐูู ุงููู ุฑุจูุ ูุฐูู ุงููู ุฑุจู
In `Uyun al-Akhbar: In its isnad to `Abd al-Azeez b. al-Muhtadi.
He said: I asked ar-Rida ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู about monotheism, so he said: Whomever recites qul huwallah and acted by it has recognized monotheism. I said: How should he recite it? He said: Just as the people recite it. And he would add: That is Allah, my Lord; that is Allah, my Lord; that is Allah, my Lord (kadhalik Allahu rabbi).
ููู ุจุงุจ ุฐูุฑ ุฃุฎูุงู ุงูุฑุถุง ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ููุตู ุนุจุงุฏุชู ููุงู ุฅุฐุง ูุฑุฃ ” ูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ” ูุงู: ูู ุฃุญุฏุ ูุฅุฐุง ูุฑุบ ู ููุง ูุงู: ูุฐูู ุงููู ุฑุจูุง ุซูุงุซุง
And in the chapter on the etiquette of ar-Rida ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู and his description according to his servants: Whenever he would recite qul huwallahu ahad, he would say: “He is Allah, the One.” And whenever he would complete it, he would say: “That is Allah, our Lord” three times.

In Kitab at-Tawheed: From Amir al-Mu’mineen ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู :
I saw al-Khidr ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู in my dream one night before Badr, so I said to him: Teach me something through which I can prevail over the enemy. So he said: O He, O He besides whom there is no one. So when I awoke, I told the Messenger of Allah ,ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู, and he said to me: O `Ali, you have learned the Greatest Name. So it was upon my tongue on the day of Badr.
And when Amir al-Mu’mineen ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู finished reciting qul huwallahu ahad he said: O He, O He besides whom there is no one, forgive me and support me against the disbelieving people.
ูู ูุชุงุจ ุซูุงุจ ุงูุฃุนู ุงู ุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุนู ุฃุจู ุนุจุฏ ุงููู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูุงู: ู ู ู ุถุช ูู ุฌู ุนุฉ ููู ููุฑุฃ ูููุง ุจูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ุซู ู ุงุช ู ุงุช ุนูู ุฏูู ุฃุจู ููุจ
In Kitab Thawab al-A`mal: By its isnad from Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: Whomever allows a Friday to pass without reciting qul huwallahu ahad in it, and then he dies, he dies upon the religion of Abu Lahab.
ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุนู ุฃุจู ุนุจุฏ ุงููู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูุงู: ู ู ุงุตุงุจู ู ุฑุถ ุฃู ุดุฏุฉ ููู ููุฑุฃ ูู ู ุฑุถุฉ ุฃู ุดุฏุชู ุจูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ุซู ู ุงุช ูู ู ุฑุถู ุฃู ูู ุชูู ุงูุดุฏุฉ ุงูุชู ูุฒูุช ุจู ููู ู ู ุฃูู ุงููุงุฑ
By its isnad from Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: Whomever is afflicted with an illness or a hardship and he does not recite qul huwallahu ahad during that illness or that hardship, then he is from the people of the Fire.
ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุนู ุฃุจู ุนุจุฏ ุงููู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูุงู: ู ู ูุงู ูุคู ู ุจุงููู ูุงูููู ุงูุขุฎุฑ ููุง ูุฏุน ุงู ููุฑุฃ ูู ุฏุจุฑ ุงููุฑูุถุฉ ุจูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ูุฅูู ู ู ูุฑุฃูุง ุฌู ุน ุงููู ูู ุฎูุฑ ุงูุฏููุง ูุงูุงุฎุฑ ูุบูุฑ ูู ูููุงูุฏูู
And by its isnad from Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not abandon reciting qul huwallahu ahad after his obligatory prayers, for whomever recites it, Allah will gather the good of this world and the Hereafter for him, and forgive him and his parents.
ย ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุนู ุฃู ูุฑ ุงูู ุคู ููู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูุงู: ูุงู ุฑุณูู ุงููู ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู ู ู ูุฑุฃ ูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ู ุฃุฉ ู ุฑุฉ ุญูู ูุฃุฎุฐ ู ุถุฌุนู ุบูุฑ ุงููู ูู ุฐููุจ ุฎู ุณูู ุณูุฉ
By its isnad from Amir al-Mu’mineen ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: The Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู said: Whomever recites qul huwallahu ahad one hundred times when he goes to bed, Allah will forgive fifty years of his sins.
ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุนู ุฌุนูุฑ ุจู ู ุญู ุฏ ุนู ุฃุจูู ุนูููู ุง ุงูุณูุงู ูุงู: ุฅู ุงููุจู ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู ุตูู ุนูู ุณุนุฏ ุจู ู ุนุงุฐ ููุงู: ููุฏ ูุงูู ู ู ุงูู ูุงุฆูุฉ ุชุณุนูู ุฃูู ู ููุ ููููู ุฌุจุฑุฆูู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูุตููู ุนููู ูููุช ูู: ูุง ุฌุจุฑุฆูู ุจู ุง ุงุณุชุญู ุตูุงุชู ุนูููุููุงู: ุจูุฑุงุกุฉ ูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏย ุฃุญุฏ ูุงุฆู ุง ููุงุนุฏุง ูุฑุงูุจุง ูู ุงุดูุง ูุฐุงูุจุง ูุฌุงุฆูุง
And by this isnad from Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father ุนูููู ุง ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: The Prophet ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู prayed over Sa`d b. Mu`adh, so he said: Ninety thousand angels including Gabriel ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู prayed over him, so I said: “O Gabriel, what made him deserve your praying over him?” So he said: “He would read qul huwallahu ahad whenever he stood, sat, rode, walked, went, and came back.”
ย ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุนู ุฃุจู ุนุจุฏ ุงููู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูุงู: ู ู ุขูู ุฅูู ูุฑุงุดู ููุฑุฃ ูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ุฅุญุฏู ุนุดุฑ ู ุฑุฉ ุญูุธ ูู ุฏุงุฑู ููู ุฏููุฑุงุช ุญููู
And by this isnad from Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: Whoever goes to his bed and recites qul huwallahu ahad eleven times will be be protected in his house and in the houses around him.
ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุนู ุนุจุฏ ุงููู ุจู ุญู ูุงู: ุณู ุนุช ุฃู ูุฑ ุงูู ุคู ููู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูููู: ู ู ูุฑุฃ ูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ุนุดุฑุฉ ู ุฑุฉ ูู ุฏุจุฑ ุงููุฌุฑ ูู ูุชุจุนู ูู ุฐูู ุงูููู ุฐูุจ ูุงู ุฑุบู ุฃูู ุงูุดูุทุงู
And by its isnad from `Abdillah b. Hayy.
He said: I heard Amir al-Mu’mineen ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู say: Whoever recites qul huwallahu ahad eleven times after al-Fajr will not be followed by a wolf that day, and he would have snubbed Satan.
ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุนู ุฅุจุฑุงููู ุจู ู ูุฒู ุนู ุฑุฌู ุณู ุน ุฃุจุง ุงูุญุณู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูููู: ู ู ูุฑุฃ ูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ุจููู ูุจูู ุฌุจุงุฑ ู ูุนู ุงููู ู ูู ุจูุฑุงุกุชู ุจูู ูุฏูู ูู ู ุฎููู ูุนู ูู ููู ูุนู ุดู ุงููุ ูุฅุฐุง ูุนู ุฐูู ุฑุฒูู ุงููู ุฎูุฑู ูู ูุนู ุดุฑู
And by its isnad from Ibrahim b. Muhzam from a man who heard Abu’l Hasan ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู say:
Whomever recites qul huwallahu ahad, Allah will prevent an oppressor from reaching him from in front, behind, his right, and his left by his recitation. If he does that, Allah will grant him His goodness and protect him from His harm.
ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุนู ุฃุจู ุฌุนูุฑ ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูุงู: ู ู ุฃูุชุฑ ุจุงูู ุนูุฐุชูู ููู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ููู ูู: ูุง ุนุจุฏ ุงููู ุฃุจุดุฑ ููุฏ ูุจู ุงููู ูุชุฑู
By its isnad from Abu Ja`far ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: Whomever prays witr with the mu`awadhatayn and qul huwallahu ahad, it is said to him: O slave of Allah, be happy, for Allah has accepted your witr.
ย ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุฅูู ุณููู ุงู ุจู ุฎุงูุฏ ูุงู: ุณู ุนุช ุฃุจุง ุนุจุฏ ุงููู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูููู: ู ู ู ุถุช ุจู ุซูุงุซุฉ ุฃูุงู ูู ููุฑุฃ ูููุง ูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ููุฏ ุฎุฐู ููุฒุน ุฑุจูุฉ ุงูุงูู ุงู ู ู ุนูููุ ูุงู ู ุงุช ูู ูุฐู ุงูุซูุงุซุฉ ุฃูุงู ูุงู ูุงูุฑุง ุจุงููู ุงูุนุธูู
And by its isnad to Sulayman b. Khalid.
He said: I heard Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู say: Whomever allows three days to pass without reciting qul huwallahu ahad in them, he has betrayed and removed the yoke of faith from his neck. If he dies in these three days, he will be a disbeliever in Allah the Greatest.
ูู ูุชุงุจ ุงูุชูุญูุฏ ุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุฅูู ุนู ุฑู ุจู ุญุตูู ุงู ุงููุจู ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู ุจุนุซ ุณุฑูุฉ ู ุงุณุชุนู ู ุนูููุง ุนููุง ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ููู ุง ุฑุฌุนูุง ุณุฃููู ููุงููุง: ูู ุฎูุฑ ุบูุฑ ุฃูู ูุฑุฃ ุจูุง ูู ูู ุงูุตูุงุฉ ุจูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏุ ููุงู: ูุง ุนูู ูู ูุนูุช ูุฐุงุููุงู: ูุญุจู ููู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏุ ููุงู ุงููุจู ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู: ู ุง ุฃุญุจุจุชูุง ุญุชู ุฃุญุจุจู ุงููู ุนุฒ ูุฌู
In Kitab at-Tawheed: By its isnad to `Amr b. Hussayn.
The Prophet ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู sent an expedition and appointed `Ali ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ย to lead it. So when he returned, he asked them, so they said: Everything was fine, except he would only recite qul huwallahu ahad in every prayer that he led us in. So he said: O `Ali, why did you do this? So he said: Due to my love for qul huwallahu ahad. So the Prophet ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู said: You did not love it until Allahย ุนุฒ ูุฌู loved you.
ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุฅูู ุฃุจู ุจุตูุฑ ุนู ุฃุจู ุนุจุฏ ุงููู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูุงู: ู ู ูุฑุง ูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ู ุฑุฉ ูุงุญุฏุฉ ููุฃูู ุง ูุฑุฃ ุซูุซ ุงููุฑุขูุ ูุซูุซ ุงูุชูุฑุงุฉุ ูุซูุซ ุงูุฅูุฌููุ ูุซูุซ ุงูุฒุจูุฑ
By its isnad to Abu Baseer frm Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: Whomever recites qul huwallah ahad one time, it is as if he has recited one third of the Qur’an, one third of the Torah, one third of the Gospel, and one third of the Psalms.
ูู ูุชุงุจ ุงูุฎุตุงู ูู ู ูุงูุจ ุฃู ูุฑ ุงูู ุคู ููู ูุชุนุฏุงุฏูุง ูุงู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู : ูุงู ุง ุงูุญุงุฏูุฉ ูุงูุณุชูู ูุงูู ุณู ุนุช ุฑุณูู ุงููู ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู ูููู: ูุง ุนูู ู ุซูู ู ุซู ูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ู ู ุฃุญุจู ุจููุจู ููุฃูู ุง ูุฑุง ุซูุซ ุงููุฑุขูุ ูู ู ุฃุญุจู ุจููุจู ูุฃุนุงูู ุจูุณุงูู ููุฃูู ุง ูุฑุง ุซูุซู ุงููุฑุขูุ ูู ู ุฃุญุจู ุจููุจู ูุฃุนุงูู ุจูุณุงูู ููุตุฑู ุจูุฏู ููุฃูู ุง ูุฑุง ุงููุฑุขู ููู
In Kitab al-Khisal, in the Virtues of Amir al-Mu’mineen and its numbering:
He ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said: As for sixty-one, I heard the Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู say: O `Ali, your example is like that of qul huwallahu ahad, whomever loves you in his heart, it is as if he has recited one third of the Qur’an. Whomever loves you in his heart and bears you upon his tongue, it is as if he has recited two thirds of the Qur’an. Whomever loves you in his heart, bears you upon his tongue, and supports you with his hands, it is as if he has recited the entire Qur’an.
ูููู ุนู ุฃู ูุฑ ุงูู ุคู ููู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ู ู ูุฑุฃ ูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ุญูู ูุฃุฎุฐ ู ุถุฌุนู ููู ุงููู ุจู ุฎู ุณูู ุงูู ู ูู ูุญุฑุณููู ูููุชู
And therein from Amir al-Mu’mineen ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู : Whomever recites qul huwallahu ahad when he goes to his bed, Allah entrusts fifty thousand angels to protect him during his night.
ูู ูุชุงุจ ูู ุงู ุงูุฏูู ูุชู ุงู ุงููุนู ุฉ ุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุฅูู ุฃุจู ุงูุฏููุง ุงูู ุบุฑุจู ูุงู: ุญุฏุซูู ุนูู ุจู ุฃุจู ุทุงูุจ ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูุงู: ูุงู ุฑุณูู ุงููู ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู: ู ู ูุฑุฃ ูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ู ุฑุฉ ููุฃูู ุง ูุฑุฃ ุซูุซ ุงููุฑุขูุ ูู ู ูุฑุฃูุง ู ุฑุชูู ููุฃูู ุง ูุฑุฃ ุซูุซู ุงููุฑุขูุ ูู ู ูุฑุงูุง ุซูุงุซ ู ุฑุงุช ููุฃูู ุง ูุฑุฃ ุงููุฑุขู ููู
In Kitab Kamal ad-Deen wa Timam an-Ni`ma: By its isnad to Abu’l Dunya al-Maghribi. He said: `Ali b. Abi Talib ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู narrated to me.
He said: The Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู said: Whomever recites qul huwallahu ahad once, it is as if he has recited one third of the Qur’an. Whomever recites it twice, it is as if he has recited two thirds of the Qur’an. Whomever recites it three times, it is as if he has recited the entire Qur’an.
ูู ุตุญููุฉ ุงูุฑุถุง ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ูุงู: ูุงู ุฑุณูู ุงููู ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู ู ู ู ุฑ ุนูู ุงูู ูุงุจุฑ ููุฑุง ูู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ุฅุญุฏู ุนุดุฑุฉ ู ุฑุฉ ุซู ููุจ ุงุฌุฑู ููุฃู ูุงุช ุงุนุทู ู ู ุงูุงุฌุฑ ุจุนุฏุฏ ุงูุฃู ูุงุช
And in the Sahifa of ar-Rida: By its isnad:
He said: The Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู said: Whomever visits the graves and recites qul huwallahu ahad eleven times and dedicates his reward to the dead, he will be given a reward for each of the dead.

In Usul al-Kafi: By its isnad to Bakr b. Muhammad from he whom he narrated from from Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: Whomever says these words in every prayer, protection will be written for him, his house, his wealth, and his children: I lend myself, my wealth, my children, my family, my house, and all that is mine to Allah, the One, the Only, the Self-Subsisting, He who does not beget nor is He begotten, nor is there anything like unto Him. And I lend myself, my wealth, my children, and all that is mine to the Lord of al-Falaq, from the evil of that which He created – until its end (Surah 113) – and to the Lord of the People – until its end (Surah 114) – and with ayat al-kursi until its end.

And by its isnad to Muhammad b. al-Fudayl.
He said: Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said: It is disliked to recite qul huwallahu ahad in one breath.

By its isnad to Salih b. Sulayman al-Ja`far from Abu’l Hasan ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: I heard him say: There is not a person who makes a covenant in childhood with qul `a’uthu bi rab al-falaq and qul `a’uthu bi rab an-nas three times each, and qul huwallahu ahad one hundred times – if he cannot, then fifty times – except that Allah ุนุฒ ูุฌู will protect him from every insanity, childhood illnesses, polydipsia, and deformity in the digestive system and blood circulation. He should make a covenant with it until he greys, for if he makes a covenant with it for himself, he will be protected until the day Allah ุนุฒ ูุฌู takes his soul.

And by its isnad to al-Mufaddal b. `Umar.
He said: Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said: O Mufaddal, protect yourself from all of the people with bismillah ar-rahman ar-raheem, and with qulhuwallahu ahad. Recite them to your right, your left, your front, your back, above you, and below you. If you enter upon an oppressive ruler, then recite it three times when you look at him and clench your left hand, and do not let go until you leave him.

In al-Kafi: Muhammad b. Yahya from Ahmad b. Muhammad from Ibn Faddal from Ibn Bukayr from `Ubayd b. Zurara.
He said: I asked Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู if one could supplicate in the prayer with a surah like qul huwallahu ahad from the Book. So he said: If you supplicate with it, there is no problem.

Muhammad b. Yahya from Muhammad b. al-Husayn from Muhammad b. Isma`il from Salih b. `Uqba from Abu Harun al-Makfuf.
He said: Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said: The Fatiha is seven verses, and qul huwallahu ahad is three verses. And the hadith is long, and we have taken the relevant portion.

Abu Dawud from `Ali b. Mehzayar by his isnad from Safwan al-Jammal.
He said: I heard Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู say: Salat al-Awwabeen is fifty [units], all of which are [prayed] with qul huwallahu ahad.

By its isnad to Muthanna al-Hannat from Abu Baseer.
He said: I heard Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู say: Whomever prays four units, reciting qul huwalahu ahad two hundred times – fifty times per unit – without taking a break, there will not be a sin between him and Allah except that He has forgiven him for it.

Several of our companions from Ahmad b. Muhammad from al-Barqi from Sa`dan from `Abdillah b. Sinan from Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: Whomever prays four units and recites qul huwallahu ahad fifty times in each unit without taking a break, there will not be a sin between him and Allah.

Muhammad b. Yahya by his isnad which he raised to Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: Whomever prays two units and recites qul huwallahu ahad sixty times in each unit, he will leave without there being a sin between him and Allah.

`Ali b. Muhammad from some of our companions from Abu’l Hasan ar-Rida ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: Whomever prays the sunset prayer, and four units after it, and does not speak [to anyone] until he prays ten units, reciting the Fatiha and qul huwallahu ahad in each unit, each unit will be equal to ten units.

Ahmad from Yahya b. Ibrahim b. Abu’l Bilad from his father from Abu `Umar b. Bazee`.
He said: I entered upon Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู , and he was eating a pickle and oil in a black bowl with qul huwallahu ahad on it written in yellow.
ุนูู ุจู ู ุญู ุฏ ุฑูุนู ุนู ุฃุจู ุนุจุฏ ุงููู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูุงู: ุฅุฐุง ูุงู ุงููุตู ู ู ุดุนุจุงู ูุตู ุฃุฑุจุน ุฑูุนุงุช ุชูุฑุฃ ูู ูู ุฑูุนุฉ ุงูุญู ุฏ ู ุฑุฉุ ููู ูู ุงููู ู ุฃุฉ ู ุฑุฉ
`Ali b. Muhammad who raised it to Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: In the middle of Sha`ban, pray four units, and recite al-Fatiha once and qul huwallahu ahad one hundred times in each unit.

In Man La Yahduruhul Faqih:
And Amir al-Mu’mineen ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said: Whomever would like to come out of this world purified of sin, just as gold is purified of its impurity, without anyone a debt to anyone, then he should say the attribution of the Lord ุชุจุงุฑู ูุชุนุงูู after each of the five prayers twelve times. Then, he stretches his hands forth and says: “O Allah, I ask you by Your hidden, treasured, clean, pure, blessed name, and I ask You by Your mighty name and Your primordial power, I ask You to bless Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad, O giver of gifts, and O freer of captives, and O emancipator of the necks from the Fire. I ask You to bless Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad, and to liberate my neck from the Fire, and to take me out of this world secure, and to bring me into the Garden safely, and to make the beginning of my supplication a success, its middle a prosperity, and its end a goodness. Surely, you are the Knower of the unseen.
Then Amir al-Mu’mineen ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said: This is from the rarities that the Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู taught me, and he commanded me to teach it to al-Hasan and al-Husayn ุนูููู ุง ุงูุณูุงู .
ูู ู ุตุจุงุญ ุงูููุนู ู ุฑูู ุฃู ุงููุจู ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู ูุฐุนุชู ุนูุฑุจ ููู ูู ุงูุตูุงุฉ ููู ุง ูุฑุบ ูุงู ูุนู ุงููู ุงูุนูุฑุจ ู ุง ุชุฏุน ู ุตููุง ููุง ุบูุฑู ุงูุง ูุฐุนุชู ูุชูุงูู ูุนูู ููุชูู ุจูุงุ ุซู ุฏุนุง ุจู ุงุก ูู ูุญ ูุฌุนู ูู ุณุญ ุฐูู ุนูููุง ูููุฑุฃ ุงูุชูุญูุฏ ูุงูู ุนูุฐุชูู
In Misbah al-Kaf`ami:
It is narrated that the Prophet ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู was stung by a scorpion while he was praying. So when he finished, he said: May Allah curse the scorpion, it does not spare the one praying nor anyone else except that it stings him. He took his sandal and killed it with it. Then, he called for water and salt, and he began wiping it (the sting), and he recited Surat al-Ikhlas and the mu`awadhatayn.
ูู ูุชุงุจ ุทุจ ุงูุฃุฆู ุฉ ุนูููู ุงูุณูุงู ุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุฅูู ุฃุจู ุจุตูุฑ ุนู ุฃุจู ุฌุนูุฑ ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูุงู: ุดููุช ุฅููู ูุฌุน ุฃุถุฑุงุณู ูุงูู ูุณูุฑ ุจู ุงููููุ ูุงู: ููุงู: ูุง ุฃุจุง ุจุตูุฑ ุฅุฐุง ุฃุญุณุณุช ุจุฐูู ูุถุน ูุฏู ุนููู ูุงูุฑุฃ ุณูุฑุฉ ุงูุญู ุฏ ููู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ุซู ุงูุฑุฃ ” ูุชุฑู ุงูุฌุจุงู ุฌุงู ุฏุฉ ููู ุชู ุฑ ู ุฑ ุงูุณุญุงุจ ุตูุน ุงููู ุงูุฐู ุฃุชูู ูู ุดุฆ ุงูู ุฎุจูุฑ ุจู ุง ููุนููู ” ูุฅูู ูุณูู ุซู ูุง ูุนูุฏ
In Tubb al-A’immah ุนูููู ุงูุณูุงู : By its isnad to Abu Baseer from Abu Baseer from Abu Ja`far ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: I complained to him about a pain in my teeth that caused me to remain awake during the night. He said: O Abu Baseer, if you feel that, then place your hand upon it and recite al-Fatiha and qul huwallahu ahad, then recite: “And you see the mountains, thinking them rigid, while they will pass as the passing of clouds. [It is] the work of Allah, who perfected all things. Surely, He is Acquainted with that which you do.” (27:88) Then, it (the pain) will settle and not return.
ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุฅูู ุนู ุฑ ุจู ูุฒูุฏ ุงูุตููู ุนู ุงูุตุงุฏู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูุงู ุดูู ุฅููู ุฑุฌู ู ู ุฃูููุงุฆู ุงููุฑุงุบ ููุงู: ูุชุจ ูู ุฃู ุงููุฑุขู ูุณูุฑุฉ ุงูุงุฎูุงุต ูุงูู ุนูุฐุชูู ุซู ุชูุชุจ ุฃุณูู ุฐูู ุฃุนูุฐ ุจูุฌู ุงููู ุงูุนุธูู ูุจุนุฒุชู ุงูุชู ูุง ุชุฑุงู ูุจูุฏุฑุชู ุงูุชู ูุง ูู ุชูุน ู ููุง ุดุฆ ู ู ุดุฑ ูุฐุง ุงููุฌุน ูู ู ุดุฑ ู ุง ูููุ ุซู ูุดุฑ ุจู ุนูู ุงูุฑูู ุจู ุงุก ุงูู ุทุฑุ ุชุจุฑุฃ ุจุฅุฐู ุงููู ุชุนุงูู
By its isnad to `Umar b. Yazeed as-Sayqal from as-Sadiq ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: A man from his servants complained to him, so he wrote Umm al-Qur’an (al-Fatiha) and Surat al-Ikhlas and the mu`awadhatayn for him. Then beneath that, he wrote: “I seek refuge in the Great Face of Allah, and His glory that does not desist, and His power that is never overcome by any evil, from this pain and the evil therein.” Then, he sprinkled rain water upon him, and he was healed by the permission of Allah ุชุนุงูู.
ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุฅูู ุณูู ุฉ ุจู ู ุญุฑุฒ ูุงู: ุณู ุนุช ุฃุจุง ุฌุนูุฑ ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูููู: ู ู ูู ุชุจุฑุฆู ุณูุฑุฉ ุงูุญู ุฏ ููู ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ูู ูุจุฑุฃู ุดุฆุ ููู ุนูุฉ ุชุจุฑููุง ูุงุชูู ุงูุณูุฑุชูู
By its isnad to Salama b. Mahraz.
He said: I heard Abu Ja`far ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู say: Whomever is not healed by Surat al-Fatiha and qul huwallahu ahad will not be healed by anything. Every defect can be healed by these two surahs.

In Majma` al-Bayan: And from Abu’l Darda’ from the Prophet ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู.
He said: Are any of you able to recite one third of the Qur’an in one night? I said: O Messenger of Allah, who is able to do that? He said: Recite qul huwallahu ahad.

And from Anas from the Prophet ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู.
He said: Whomever recites qul huwallahu ahad is blessed. Whomever recites it twice is blessed with his family. Whomever recites it three times is blessed with his family and all of his neighbours. Whomever recites it twelve times will have twelve castles built for him, and its guards will say: “Let us go look at the castle of our brother”. Whomever recites it one hundred times, twenty five years of his sins will be covered, except for his sins related to blood and wealth. Whomever recites it four hundred times, four hundred years of sins will be covered. Whomever recites it one thousand times, he will not die until he sees his place in Paradise; it will be shown to him.

And from Sahl from Sa`d as-Sa`di.
He said: A man came to the Prophet ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู and complained to him about poverty and a meager living, so the Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู said to him: When you enter your house, give salaam if there is anyone therein; and if there is no one, then give salaam and recite qul huwallahu ahad once. So the man did that, and Allah granted him and his neighbours sustenance.
ูู ู ุฌู ุน ุงูุจูุงู ูุฑูู ูู ุงูุญุฏูุซ ููู ุดุฆ ูุณุจุฉ ููุณุจุฉ ุงููู ุณูุฑุฉ ุงูุงุฎูุงุต
In Majma` al-Bayan: It is narrated in the hadith: For everything there is an attribution, and the attribution of Allah is Surat al-Ikhlas.

In Usul al-Kafi: Muhammad b. Yahya from Ahmad b. Muhammad from al-Husayn b. Sa`eed from an-Nadr b. Suwayd from `Asem b. Humayd.
He said: `Ali b. al-Husayn ุตููุงุช ุงููู ุนููู was asked about monotheism, so he said: Allah ุนุฒ ูุฌู knew that there would be deep-thinking communities in the End Times, so Allah ุชุนุงูู revealed qul huwallahu ahad and the first six verses of Surat al-Hadeed. So whoever accepts anything otherwise is destroyed.

He said: The Jews asked the Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู: Describe the attribution of your Lord to us. So he remained three days, then qul huwallahu ahad was revealed.

In Kitab al-Ihtijaj of Tabrisi:
Abu Muhammad al-Hasan al-`Askari ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said: `Abdillah b. Suraya asked the Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู: Tell me about your Lord, what is He? So qul huwallahu ahad was revealed. So Ibn Suraya said: You have spoken the truth, O Muhammad. And the hadith is long, and we have taken the relevant portion.

In al-Khara’ij wal Jara’ih:
Abu Hisham said: I said to myself: “I wish I knew what Abu Muhammad ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู says about the Qur’an being created or not created.” So he turned to me and said: Have you not been told about what was narrated from Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู : When qul huwallahu ahad was revealed, Allah created four thousand wings. It would not pass by the elite angels except that they humbled themselves to it. And he said: This is the attribution of the Lord ุชุจุงุฑู ูุชุนุงูู.

In Kitab Ma`ani al-Akhbar: By its isnad to al-Asbagh b. Nubata from Amir al-Mu’mineen ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู in a long hadith in which he ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู says: The attribution of Allah ุนุฒ ูุฌู is qul huwallah.

In Ktiab `Ilal ash-Shara’i`: By its isnad to Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู in a long hadith that I have mentioned in full at the beginning of al-Isra’ with its isnad.
Therein Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู narrated a conversion between the Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู and Allah ุฌู ุฌูุงูู; He said to him: Recite qul huwallahu ahad as it was revealed, for it is My attribution and My epithet.

Therein he ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู narrated a conversation between the Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู and Allah ุฌู ุฌูุงูู: Then He ordered him to recite the attribution of his Lord ุชุจุงุฑู ูุชุนุงูู: “In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Say: Allah is One. Allah, the Self-Subsisting.” Then, He withheld His speech. So the Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู said: Say: Allah is One. Allah, the Self-Subsisting. So He said: Say: “He does not beget, nor was He begotten, and there is nothing like unto Him.” Then, He withheld His speech. So the Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู said: That is Allah, my Lord; that is Allah, my Lord; that is Allah, my Lord.

He said: I entered upon ar-Rida ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู so he said to me: Tell the Abbasid to stop talking about monotheism and other topics, and to talk to the people about that which they recognize (understand), and to stop from that which they deny. And if they ask you about monotheism, then say what Allah ุนุฒ ูุฌู said: “Say: Allah is One. Allah, the Self-Subsisting. He does not beget, nor was He begotten, and there is nothing like unto Him.” (112:1-4) And if they ask you about His modality, then say what Allah ุนุฒ ูุฌู said: “There is nothing like unto Him.” (42:11) And if they ask you about His Hearing, then say what Allah ุนุฒ ูุฌู said: “He is the Hearing, the Knowing.” Talk to the people about that which they recognize.

In `Uyun al-Akhbar: In the chapter on the reasons, in which at the end, al-Fadl b. Shadhan mentions that he heard ar-Rida ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู repeat it again and again and say something after it.
He said: So he said: Then why was it made obligatory for them to declare and recognize that Allah is One and Only? He said: For reasons, from which is that if He did not make their declaration and recognition obligatory, they may imagine that there were two Planners (gods) or more. Then, they would not be guided to the [true] Creator amidst the others, for every person would not be able to know who created them so that they may worship Him, or who ordered them so that they may obey Him. They would not know who in reality made them and created them, nor would they be able to confirm who commanded or admonished them, since they would not be able to recognize the One who issues orders and admonishes against others. Another reason is that were it possible for there to be two [gods], then neither partner would be more deserving than the other to be worshiped and obeyed. The permission to obey one of the partners is a permission to disobey Allah. The permission to not obey Allah ุนุฒ ูุฌู ููุฑ would imply disbelief in Allah and all of His Books and messengers, guaranteeing what is wrong, abandoning every responsibility, allowing all that is forbidden, forbidding all that is allowed, enjoining in every sin, abandoning all forms of obedience, allowing all corruption and abolishing every responsibility. Another reason is that if it were possible for there to be more than one [god], then it would allow Iblees to declare himself to be another [god], so that he may oppose Allah ุชุนุงูู in all of His decrees, and invite the worshipers to himself. This would result in the greatest disbelief and severest hypocrisy.

In Kitab at-Tawheed: By its isnad to Abu’l Bakhtari Wahab b. Wahab from Abu `Abdillah as-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father Muhammad b. `Ali al-Baqirย ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู , regarding the saying of Allahย ุชุจุงุฑู ูุชุนุงูู “Say: He is Allah, the One.” (112:1)
He said: “Say” means make apparent that which We have revealed to you and given you news of in the letters that We have recited to you, so that you may guide those who listen, and He is a Witness. “He” (huwa) is a name and an indicator to absence: the “h” is a caution from [interpreting] a fixed definition [for Allah], and the “w” is an indicator to His absence from the senses, just as your saying “this” (hatha) is an indicator to that which is present to the senses. This is because the disbelievers would describe their gods with letters that indicate their perceptible presence. So they would say: “These are our gods, which can be comprehended by senses and by sight. So Muhammad, point to your God whom you call to so that we may see Him and comprehend Him. So Allah ุชุจุงุฑู ูุชุนุงูู revealed: “Say: He is Allah, the One.” (112:1) So the “h” establishes the established,ย and the “w” is an indicator to He who is absent from the comprehension of sights and senses. He is above that, rather, He comprehends all sights, and He creates the senses.
ูููู ููุงู ุฃู ูุฑ ุงูู ุคู ููู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู : ุงููู ู ุนูุงู ุงูู ุนุจูุฏ ุงูุฐู ูุฃูู ููู ุงูุฎูู ููุคูู ุฅูููุ ูุงููู ูู ุงูู ุณุชูุฑ ุนู ุฏุฑู ุงูุงุจุตุงุฑ ูุงูู ุญุฌูุจ ุนู ุงูุฃููุงู ูุงูุฎุทุฑุงุช
And Amir al-Mu’mineen ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said: “Allah” means that which is worshiped, and taken as a deity by the creation. Allah is shrouded from the comprehension of the sights and veiled from imagination and thoughts.
ูุงู ุงูุจุงูุฑ ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู : ู ุนูุงู ุงูู ุนุจูุฏ ุงูุฐู ุงูู ุงูุฎูู ุนู ุฏุฑู ู ุงุฆูุชู ูุงูุฅุญุงุทุฉ ุจููููุชูุ ููููู ุงูุนุฑุจ: ุงูู ุงูุฑุฌู ุฅุฐุง ุชุญูุฑ ูู ุงูุดุฆ ููู ูุญุท ุจู ุนูู ุงุ ูููู: ุฅุฐุง ูุฒุน ุฅูู ุดุฆ ู ู ุง ูุญุฐุฑู ููุฎุงููุ ูุงูุฅูู ูู ุงูู ุณุชูุฑ ุนู ุญูุงุณ ุงูุฎูู
And al-Baqir ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said: Its meaning is that which is worshiped, that which the creation takes as a God that they cannot comprehend and is beyond modality. And the Arabs say: The God of the man who becomes perplexed by a thing and is not able to comprehend it. And: If he panics at a thing that cautions him and scares him, then his God is He who is shrouded from the senses of the people.
ูููู ููุงู ููุฑุถุง ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูู ุงูุชูุญูุฏ ูููู ุฃุญุฏ ูุง ุจุชุฃููู ุนุฏุฏ
And therein there are words from ar-Rida ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู regarding monotheism, and that “the One” (112:1) is not a reference to numbering.

Al-Baqir ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said: The One, the Only, the Unique, the One in the meaning of one. He is the Unique that has no counterpart. Monotheism is the declaration of His oneness, which is uniqueness. The One, the Dissimilar, who is not emitted from anything, nor is He united with anything. Numbering is built upon the one, but the one is not from numbering, because numbering is not ascribed to the one, rather it is ascribed to the two. So the meaning of His saying: “Allah, the One” means that which is worshiped, which the creation takes as a God that they cannot comprehend and is beyond modality. He is alone in godhood, and is above the characteristics of His creation.

By its isnad to al-Muqdam b. Shareeh b. Hani from his father.
He said: A bedouin came to Amir al-Mu’mineen ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู on the day of [the Battle of] Jamal and said: O Amir al-Mu’mineen, do you say that Allah is One? So the people rushed to him and said: O bedouin, do you not see that Amir al-Mu’mineen is busy? So Amir al-Mu’mineen ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said: Bring him, for what the bedouin wants is what we want from these people (the enemy). Then, he said: O bedouin, the saying that ‘Allah is One’ can be understood in four different perspectives – two of which are impossible for Allah ุนุฒ ูุฌู, and two are well-established. As for the two that are impossible for Him: (1) The saying that ‘one’ is understood through numbering, and this is impossible because He has no second, and He cannot be brought into a numerical system. Do you not see that those who say ‘three, trinity’ have disbelieved? (2) The saying that He is one of the people, meaning that He is from a species and genus, and this is impossible for Him, for that is likening Him [to His creation], and our Lord is too majestic and too high for that. As for the two well-established perspectives: (1) The saying that He is One, and has no similarity to the things; that is our Lord. (2) The saying that our Lord ุนุฒ ูุฌู is One in the sense that He cannot be divided in reality, nor in the intellect, nor in the imagination; that is our Lord ุนุฒ ูุฌู.

In Usul al-Kafi: `Ali b. Ibrahim from al-Mukhtar b. Muhammad al-Mukhtar al-Hamadani and Muhammad b. al-Hasan from `Abdillah al-Hasan al-`Alawi together from al-Fat`h b. Yazeed al-Jarjani from Abu’l Hasan ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: I heard him say: He is the Subtle, the Aware, the Hearing, the Seeing, the One, the Only, the Self-Subsisting, He does not beget, nor was He begotten, nor is there anything like unto Him. If He were as those who liken Him [to His creation], the Creator would not be distinguishable from the creation, nor the Maker from the made. Rather, He is the Maker who differentiated between bodies and forms, and no thing is likened to Him. I said: May Allah make me your sacrifice, you said: “The Only, the Self-Subsisting”, and you said: “No thing is likened to Him”, but Allah is One, and a human is one – are they not likened to one another in their oneness? He said: O Fat`h, may Allah make you steadfast. Likening (tashbeeh) is in meaning, but as for names, “one” is an indicator to that which is named. If a human is said to be one, it means that he is one body and not two, but a human is not just one, because his organs are different and his colours are different. He whose colours are different cannot be one [united essence]. Rather, he is comprised of different components; his blood is not his flesh, and his flesh is not his blood, his nerves are not his veins, his hair is not his skin, and his blackness is not his whiteness. And that is the way of all created things. A human is one in name but he is not one in meaning, while Allah ุฌู ุฌูุงูู is One, and no one is One except Him. He has not differentiation, nor variance, nor additions, nor increases, nor decreases. As for the created and made human, he is comprised of different parts and qualities, and he is not one solitary thing. I said: May I be your sacrifice, you have relieved me. May Allah relieve you. And the hadith is long, and we have taken the relevant portion.

He said: From the primordial characteristics is that He is One, Alone, Self-Subsisting, and one in meaning, not many and diverse in meaning.

In Nahj al-Balagha: “The One” and not in a numerical sense.

In Kitab al-Ihtijaj of al-Tabrisi: And Abu Hisham Dawud b. al-Qasim al-Ja`fari said: I said to Abu Ja`far the Second ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู : “Say: He is Allah, the One” (112:1) What is the meaning of “the One”? He said: The universal meaning of oneness. Have you not heard Him say: “And if you ask them who created the heavens and the Earth, and subjected the Sun and the Moon, they will say, ‘Allah’.” (29:61) After that, would He have a partner or a [female] companion?

He said: I said to Abu Ja`far the Second ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู : What is “the Self-Subsisting”? He said: The Master upon which everything relies, in little and in much.

Several of our companions from Ahmad b. Abu `Abdillah from Muhammad b. `Isa from Yunus b. `Abd ar-Rahman from al-Hasan b. as-Sira from Jabir b. Yazeed al-Ju`fi.
He said: I asked Abu Ja`far ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู something about monotheism, so he said: Allah ุชุจุงุฑู ูุชุนุงูู, who is called to by His names, is exalted in His being. He is One, united solitarily in His oneness. He then made His creatures and thus He is One, Self-Subsisting and Holy. He is worshiped by all things, and all things depend on Him. His knowledge expands over all things. This is the correct meaning of the Self-Subsisting. He cannot be likened to anything. And if the meaning of the Self-Subsisting as an attribute of Allah ุนุฒ ูุฌู is that He is solid, it would contradict His ุนุฒ ูุฌู saying: “There is nothing like unto Him.” (42:11), because that is an attribute of solid, unopened bodies. Allah is greatly above that.

In Kitab at-Tawheed: Al-Baqir ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said: My father Zayn al-`Abideen narrated to me from his father al-Husayn b. `Ali ุนูููู ุงูุณูุงู that: The Self-Subsisting is He who has no openings, and the Self-Subsisting is He who does not sleep, and the Self-Subsisting is He who does not cease nor disappear.

ูุงู: ูุณุฆู ุนูู ุจู ุงูุญุณูู ุฒูู ุงูุนุงุจุฏูู ุนูููู ุง ุงูุณูุงู ุนู ุงูุตู ุฏุููุงู: ุงูุตู ุฏ ุงูุฐู ูุง ุดุฑูู ููุ ููุง ูุคุฏู ุญูุธ ุดุฆ ููุง ูุนุฒุจ ุนูู ุดุฆ
Al-Baqir ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said: Muhammad b. al-Hanifiyya ุฑุถู ุงููู ุนูู said: The Self-Subsisting is He who is Self-Existent and needless of others. And he also said: The Self-Subsisting is He who is higher than the universe and corruption, and the Self-Subsisting is He who is not described with change.
Al-Baqir ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said: The Self-Subsisting is the Obeyed Master, who does not have one who commands or prohibits above Him.
And he aid: `Ali b. al-Husayn Zayn al-`Abideen ุนูููู ุง ุงูุณูุงู was aksed about the Self-Subsisting. So he said: The Self-Subsisting is He who does not have a partner, no one aids Him in preserving anything, and nothing escapes from Him.

Wajab b. Wahab al-Qarshi said: Zayn al-`Abideen ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said: The Self-Subsisting is He who, if He wants anything, He says to it “Be! And it is.” (2:117) The Self-Subsisting is He who originated the things, so He created them into opposites, forms, and pairs. He is unique in oneness, and has no opposite, nor a form, nor an example, nor a counterpart.

Wahab b. Wahab al-Qarshi said: as-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad narrated to me from his father al-Baqir from his forefathers ุนูููู ุงูุณูุงู that the people of Basra wrote to al-Husayn b. `Ali ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู asking him about [the meaning of] the Self-Subsisting, so he wrote to them: In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Do not fight over [the interpretation of] the Qur’an, and do not debate over it, and do not talk about it without knowledge, for I have heard my grandfather the Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู say: Whomever speaks about the Qur’an without knowledge shall take his seat in the Fire. Allah ุณุจุญุงูู explained [the meaning of] the Self-Subsisting: “He does not beget, nor was He begotten, and there is nothing like unto Him.” (112:3-4) – and the rest of this report will be mentioned later, God-willingly.

Wahab b. Wahab al-Qarshi said: I heard as-Sadiq ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู say:
A delegation from the people of Palestine came to al-Baqir ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู , and they asked him questions and he answered them. Then, they asked him about the [meaning of] Self-Subsisting. So he said: Self-Subsisting (as-Samad) has five letters. The alif is an indicator to His subtlety, and that is Hisย ุนุฒ ูุฌู saying: “Allah bears witness that there is no god except He” (3:18), and that is an indicator to He who is hidden from the comprehension of the senses. The lam is an indicator to His divinity, that He is Allah. The alif and the lam [in the word as-Samad] are both subtle and do not appear upon the tongue, nor do they strike the hearing, but they appear in the text as an indicator that His divinity is subtle and hidden, and is not comprehended by the senses, nor can it be described by the tongue, nor can it be heard by the ears. The meaning of al-ilah is that His essence and modality is above the comprehension, senses, and imagination of the creation. Rather, He is the Originator of the imagination and the Creator of the senses, and that becomes clear in the text. This indicates that Allah ุณุจุญุงูู made His lordship apparent through His origination of the creation, and instilling their intangible souls into their tangible bodies. If a worshiper were to look into himself, he would not see his soul, just as the lam in as-Samad is unclear and unattainable to the five senses. But once he looks at the text, that which was hidden and subtle becomes apparent. Whenever a worshiper contemplates over the pure essence and His modality, he becomes perplexed, and he is unable of defining or giving a form to Him in his thoughts; because He ุนุฒ ูุฌู is the Creator of forms. So if he looks to His creation, it will become clear to him that He ุนุฒ ูุฌู is its Creator and the one who instilled the souls into the bodies. As for the sod, it is an indicator that He ุนุฒ ูุฌู is truthful (sadiq) – His speech is true, and His words are true. He called His servants to following the truth with truth, and He truthfully promised the Abode of Truth. As for the meem, it is an indicator to His kingdom (mulk), and that He is the True King that does not cease nor disappear, and His kingdom will never cease. As for the daal, it is an indicator to the longevity of His kingdom (dawam mulkihi), and that He is eternally (da’im) above the universe and vulnerability. Yea, He is Allah ุนุฒ ูุฌู, who, with His ability, created the every being.
Then he ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู : said: If you were to look to my knowledge, which Allah ุนุฒ ูุฌู has given me to carry, you would have spread monotheism, the religion of Islam, and the laws from the Self-Subsisting. Let alone my grandfather Amir al-Mu’mineen ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู , who carried his knowledge until he would breathe heavily (gasping for air). He would say upon the pulpit: Ask me before you lose me. I am surrounded by delinquents, and I cannot find anyone to bear my knowledge. Surely, I am a speaking Proof from Allah upon you. “Do not take a people whom Allah is angry with as authorities. They have despaired of the Hereafter just as the disbelievers have despaired the inhabitants of the graves.” (60:13).
Then al-Baqir ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said: Praise be to Allah who blessed us and supported us for His servants. The One, the Self-Subsisting, He who does not beget, nor is He begotten, nor is there anything like unto Him. He averted us from the worship of idols. Eternal praises and thanks to Him.

He said: I heard Abu’l Hasan ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู being asked about the Self-Subsisting. So he said: The Self-Subsisting is He who has no openings.

And by its isnad to Muhammad b. Muslim from Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: The Jews asked the Messenger of Allah and said: Describe the attribution of your Lord to us. So he remained three days, then this entire Surah was revealed. So I said [to Abu `Abdillah]: What is the Self-Subsisting? So he said: He who is not hollow.

My father ุฑุถู ุงููู ุนูู said: Sa`d b. `Abdulah narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa narrated to us from Ibn Faddal from al-Halabi and Zurara from Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: Allah ุชุจุงุฑู ูุชุนุงูู is One, Self-Subsisting, and has no openings. The Spirit is a creation from His creations. It is a support, aid, and strength that Allah puts into the hearts of messengers and believers.

He said: In a long hadith: Allah is a light in which there is no darkness, and He is a foundation in which there is no entrance.

And therein Wahab b. Wahab al-Qarshi said: as-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad narrated to me from his father al-Baqir from his father ุนูููู ุงูุณูุงู that the people of Basra wrote to al-Husayn b. `Ali ุนูููู ุง ุงูุณูุงู , asking him about about [the meaning of] the Self-Subsisting, so he wrote to them: In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Do not fight over [the interpretation of] the Qur’an, and do not debate over it, and do not talk about it without knowledge, for I have heard my grandfather the Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู say: Whomever speaks about the Qur’an without knowledge shall take his seat in the Fire. Allah ุณุจุญุงูู explained [the meaning of] the Self-Subsisting: “He does not beget, nor was He begotten, and there is nothing like unto Him.” (112:3-4) “He does not beget” means that nothing tangible comes out of Him like a child, but rather He created the tangible things that come out of the creatures; nor does anything intangible like spirits [come out of Him], nor does He branch out into tribes like those who become drowsy and sleep, nor does [He experience] worry, grief, joy, laughing, weeping, fear, hope, want, boredom, hunger, satiation. He is too high to beget any tangible or intangible thing.”Nor was He begotten” means that He was not begotten from anything, nor did He come from anything, as the tangible things come out of a place of origin – like a thing from a thing, a beast from a beast, plants from the Earth, water from springs, and fruits from trees; nor is He like the intangible things that come out of their centres – like sight from the eye, hearing from the ears, smell from the nose, tasting from the mouth, words from the tongue, recognition and distinguishing from the heart, and fire from the stone. Rather, He is Allah, the self-Subsisting, He who is not from a thing, nor in a thing, nor upon a thing; the Initiator and Creator of things, the Originator and Predestiner of things. Everything He created will fade into annihilation by His will, and everything He created will remain in His knowledge. That is He who neither begets nor is begotten, He who knows the hidden and the apparent, the Great, the High, and nothing is like unto Him.
ย ูููู ู ุชุตู ุจุขุฎุฑ ู ุง ููููุง ู ู ุฌูุงุจ ุงูุจุงูุฑ ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูุฃูู ููุณุทูู ุฃุนูู ูููู ูุงุตุจุง ููููู ุนุฒ ูุฌู ” ูู ููุฏ ููู ูููุฏ ” ูููู: ูู ููุฏ ุนุฒ ูุฌู ููููู ูู ููุฏ ูุฑุซู ูู ู ูููุ ููู ูููุฏ ููููู ูู ูุงูุฏ ูุดุฑูู ูู ุฑุจูุจูุชู ูู ููู ููู ููู ูู ูููุง ุฃุญุฏ ููุนุงุฒู ูู ุณูุทุงูู
And therein, connected to the end of what we mentioned from the answer of al-Baqir ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู to the people of Palestine, regarding His ุนุฒ ูุฌู saying: “He does not beget, nor was He begotten” (112:3). He said: He ุนุฒ ูุฌู does not beget lest He have a son who inherits His kingdom, nor was He begotten lest He have a parent who is His partner in His lordship and His kingdom, and nothing is like unto Him lest He share His authority.
ูููู ุฎุทุจุฉ ูุนูู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูููู ูููุง: ุงูุฐู ูู ูููุฏ ููููู ูู ุงูุนุฒ ู ุดุงุฑูุงุ ู ูู ููุฏ ููููู ู ูุฑูุซุง ู ุงููุง
And therein in a sermon of `Ali ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู he says: He who was not begotten, lest He be a partner in glory, nor does He beget, lest He bequeaths His kingdom.
ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุฅูู ู ูุถู ุจู ุนู ุฑ ูุงู: ุณู ุนุช ุฃุจุง ุนุจุฏ ุงููู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูููู: ุงูุญู ุฏ ููู ุงูุฐู ูู ููุฏ ููููุฏ ููู ูููุฏ ููุดุงุฑู
By its isnad to Mufaddal b. `Umar.
He said: I heard Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู say: Praise be to Allah, who does not beget, lest He go into labour, nor was He begotten, lest He have a partner.
ูููู ุฎุทุจุฉ ูุนูู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ุฃูุถุง ููููุง: ุชุนุงูู ุนู ุฃู ูููู ูู ููู ููุดุจู ุจู
And therein in a sermon of `Ali ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู : He is too high to have anything like Him, or else He will be similar to it.
ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุฅูู ูุนููุจ ุงูุณุฑุงุฌ ุนู ุฃุจู ุนุจุฏ ุงููู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูููู: ุงูุญู ุฏ ููู ุงูุฐู ูู ููุฏ ููููุฏ ููู ูููุฏ ููุดุงุฑู
By its isnad to Ya`qub as-Sarraj from Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู :
He said: Praise be to Allah, who does not beget, lest He got into labour, nor was He begotten, lest He have a partner.
ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุฅูู ูุนููุจ ุงูุณุฑุงุฌ ุนู ุฃุจู ุนุจุฏ ุงููู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ุฃูู ูุงู ูู ุญุฏูุซ ูู ููุฏ ูุงู ุงูููุฏ ูุดุจู ุฃุจุงูุ ููู ูููุฏ ููุดุจู ู ู ูุงู ูุจููุ ููู ููู ูู ู ู ุฎููู ูููุง ุฃุญุฏุงุ ุชุนุงูู ุนู ุตูุฉ ู ู ุณูุงู ุนููุง ูุจูุฑุง
By its isnad to Ya`qub as-Sarraj from Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู , that he said in a hadith: He does not beget, because a child is similar to its father; nor was He begotten, because He would be similar to whomever was before Him; and nothing from His creation is like unto Him. He is greatly above the characteristics of others.
ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุฅูู ุญู ุงุฏ ุจู ุนู ุฑู ุงููุตูุจู ูุงู: ุณุฃูุช ุฌุนูุฑ ุจู ู ุญู ุฏ ุนูููู ุง ุงูุณูุงู ุนู ุงูุชูุญูุฏุููุงู: ูุงุญุฏ ุตู ุฏ ุฃุฒูู ุตู ุฏู ูุงุธู ูู ูู ุณููุ ููู ูู ุณู ุงูุฃุดูุงุก ุจุฃุธูุชูุงุ ูู ููุฏ ูููุฑุซุ ููู ูููุฏ ููุดุงุฑูุ ููู ููู ูู ูููุง ุฃุญุฏ
By its isnad to Hammad b. `Amr an-Nusaybi.
He said: I asked Ja`far b. Muhammad ุนูููู ุง ุงูุณูุงู ย about monotheism, so he said: He is One, Self-Subsisting, eternal, established and not held by anything, while He holds the foundation of everything. He does not beget, lest He bequeath, nor was He begotten, lest He have a partner, and there is nothing like unto Him.
ูุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุฅูู ุงุจู ุฃุจู ุนู ูุฑ ุนู ู ูุณู ุจู ุฌุนูุฑ ุนูููู ุง ุงูุณูุงู ุฃูู ูุงู: ูุงุนูู ุฃู ุงููู ุชุจุงุฑู ูุชุนุงูู ูุงุญุฏ ุฃุญุฏ ุตู ุฏ ูู ููุฏ ูููุฑุซุ ููู ูููุฏ ููุดุงุฑู
By its isnad to Ibn Abi `Umar form Musa b. Ja`far ุนูููู ุง ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: Know that Allah ุชุจุงุฑู ูุชุนุงูู is One, Alone, Self-Subsisting; He does not beget, lest He bequeath, nor was He begotten, lest He have a partner.
ูู ู ุฌู ุน ุงูุจูุงู ูุนู ุนุจุฏ ุฎูุฑ ูุงู: ุณุฃู ุฑุฌู ุนููุง ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ุนู ุชูุณูุฑ ูุฐู ุงูุณูุฑุฉุ ููุงู: ูู ุงููู ุฃุญุฏ ุจูุง ุชุฃููู ุนุฏุฏุ ุงูุตู ุฏ ุจูุง ุชุจุนูุถ ุจุฏุฏุ ูู ููุฏ ููููู ู ูุฑูุซุง ูุงููุงุ ููู ูููุฏ ููููู ุงููุง ู ุดุงุฑูุง ููู ููู ูู ู ู ุฎููู ูููุง ุฃุญุฏ
In Majma` al-Bayan: And from `Abd al-Khayr.
He said: A man asked `Ali ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู about the interpretation of this Surah, so he said: He is Allah, One but not in numbering, and Self-Subsisting and independent from need. He does not beget, lest He bequeath and be destroyed, nor was He begotten, lest He be a partnering god, nor is there anything from His creation like unto Him.
ูู ููุฌ ุงูุจูุงุบุฉ ูู ูููุฏ ุณุจุญุงูู ููููู ูู ุงูุนุฒ ู ุดุงุฑูุงุ ููู ููุฏ ููููู ู ูุฑุซุง ูุงููุง
In Nahj al-Balagha:
He ุณุจุญุงูู was not begotten, lest He be a partner in glory, nor does He beget, lest He bequeath and be destroyed.
ูููู ูู ููุฏ ููููู ู ูููุฏุงุ ููู ูููุฏ ููุตูุฑ ู ุญุฏูุฏุงุ ุฃุฌู ุนู ุงุชุฎุงุฐ ุงูุฃุจูุงุก
And therein: He does not beget, lest He be born [from something else], nor was He begotten, lest He be limited and have a need for children.
ูููู ููุง ููู ูู ูููุงููู
And therein: Nor is there anything similar to Him, lest He have an equal.
ูู ุฃุตูู ุงููุงูู ุจุงุณูุงุฏู ุฅูู ุญู ุงุฏ ุจู ุนู ุฑู ุงููุตูุจู ุนู ุฃุจู ุนุจุฏ ุงููู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ุญุฏูุซ ุทููู ูููู ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ูู ุขุฎุฑู ูู ููุฏ ูููุฑุซุ ููู ูููุฏ ููุดุงุฑูุ ููู ููู ูู ูููุง ุฃุญุฏุง
In Usul al-Kafi: By its isnad to Hammad b. `Amr an-Nusaybi from Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู , in a long hadith in which he ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู says at its end: He does not beget, lest He bequeath, nor was He begotten, lest He have a partner, nor is there anything like unto Him.
ูู ุชูุณูุฑ ุนูู ุจู ุฅุจุฑุงููู ููููู: ” ูู ููุฏ ” ุฃู ูู ูุญุฏุซุ ููููู: ” ููู ูููุฏ ููู ููู ูู ูููุง ุฃุญุฏ ” ูุงู: ูุง ูู ููู ููุง ุดุจู ููุง ุดุฑูู ููุง ุธููุฑ ููุง ู ุนูู
In Tafsir `Ali b. Ibrahim:
His saying: “He does not beget” means that He does not ensue, and His saying: “nor was He begotten, and there is nothing like unto Him.” He said: No one is similar to Him, like Him, a partner to Him, a backer of Him, or a supporter of Him.
