He saw this vision when he was nine years old, so he related it to his father. So Ya`qub said: ‘O my son! Do not relate your vision to your brothers, or they will contrive a plan against you. Surely, Satan is open enemy of humanity.'” (12:5).

In Rawdat al-Kafi: One of our companions from `Ali b. al-`Abbas from al-Hasan b. `Abd ar-Rahman from Abu’l Hasan ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู…. He said: “Dreams did not exist in the past in the beginning of creation, but rather they occurred later.” I said: “And what is the reason for that?” So he said: “Allah sent a messenger to the people of his era. So he called them to the worship of Allah and to His obedience.ย They said, โ€˜If we were to do that, what is in it for us? For, by Allah, you are not more wealthy than we are, nor is your lineage more glorious than ours.โ€™ย He said, โ€˜If you were all to obey me, Allah will enter you into Paradise, and if you were to disobey me, Allah will enter you into the Fire.โ€™ย They said, โ€˜What is Paradise and the Fire?โ€™ So he described that for them. So they said, โ€˜When do we go to that?โ€™ย He said, โ€˜When you die.โ€™ย They said, โ€˜But we have seen our dead become bones and dust.โ€™ So they increased in their denial and contempt of it. So Allah enabled them to experience dreams. The dreams came to them, and they became informed by what they saw and what they denied. So he said, โ€˜Allah intended to argue against you by this. This is how your spirits are. When you all die and your bodies decay, your spirits will go towards chastisement until the bodies are resurrected.โ€™โ€

In `Ilal ash-Shara’i`: Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil ุฑุถูŠ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู†ู‡ narrated to us. He said: `Abdullah b. Ja`far al-Himyari narrated to us from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa from al-Hasan b. Mahbub from Maalik b. `Atiyya from al-Thumali. He said: I prayed al-Fajr with `Ali b. al-Husayn ุนู„ูŠู‡ู…ุง ุงู„ุณู„ุงู… in Medina on Friday. When he finished the prayer and his supplication, he returned to his house, and I was with him. He called his maid, whose name was Sakeena, and he said to her: “Feed every beggar who knocks on my door, for today is Friday.” I said to him: “Not everyone who begs is deserving.” So he said: “O Thabit! I fear that I refrain from feeding a beggar who is deserving and turn him away, for what happened to Ya`qub and his Family may happen to us, the Ahl al-Bayt. Feed them, feed them. Ya`qub would slaughter a sheep every day, and he would give some of it away as charity, and he and his family would eat from it. A beggar who was a deserving, fasting believer who had a status with Allah, who was a strange traveler and was ostensibly poor, came to the door of Ya`qub on the eve of Friday when he began eating. He (the beggar) called: ‘Feed the traveling, strange, ostensibly poor beggar with extra food.’ He repeated this at his door, and they heard him, but they ignored his right, and they did not believe his words. So he became sad that they [did not] feed him, so he returned that night and wept and complained about his hunger to Allah ุนุฒ ูˆุฌู„. He slept starving, and he awoke fasting and hungry, but patient and thankful to Allah; while Ya`qub and his family slept satisfied and full, and they awoke with extra food.” He said: “So Allah ุนุฒ ูˆุฌู„ revealed to Ya`qub at the beginning of that night: ‘You have belittled, O Ya`qub, My servant, and you have evoked My anger. The bringing of My chastisement and My punishment upon you and your son has become obligatory. O Ya`qub, surely, the most beloved of My prophets and the noblest to Me is he who is merciful to My needy servants, and is near to them and feeds them, and they have a shelter and a refuge. O Ya`qub! You did not have mercy for Dhimyal, my servant, who strives in his worship, who is satisfied with little from this world. Yesterday, he knocked on your door when you began eating, and he called to you: ‘Feed the traveling, strange, ostensibly poor beggar.’ You did not feed him anything, so he returned, wept, and complained about this to me. He slept starving, but thankful of Me and patient, and he awoke fasting; while you, O Ya`qub, and your son were satisfied and awoke with extra food. Do you not know, O Ya`qub, that My punishment and chastisement comes faster to My friends than it does to My enemies? And that is so that My friends can see better and so that My enemies can wallow. By My glory, I will descend my chastisement upon you, and I will make you and your son the recipients of My chastisement and My punishment, so be content with My judgment and be patient amidst the chastisement.'” So I said to `Ali b. al-Husayn ุนู„ูŠู‡ู…ุง ุงู„ุณู„ุงู…: “May I be your sacrifice! When did Yusuf see the vision?” So he said: “In the same night that Ya`qub and the Family of Ya`qub slept satisfied and Dhimyal slept hungry. So when Yusuf saw the vision, he awoke and narrated it to his father Ya`qub. So Ya`qub became sorrowful when he heard about the vision from Yusuf with what Allah ุนุฒ ูˆุฌู„ revealed to him regarding the calamities. So Ya`qub said to Yusuf: ‘Do not relate your vision to your brothers, or [I fear that] they will contrive a plan against you.’ (12:5) However, Yusuf did not conceal his vision, and he narrated his vision to his brothers.” `Ali b. al-Husayn ุนู„ูŠู‡ู…ุง ุงู„ุณู„ุงู… said: “The first chastisement to fall upon Ya`qub and the Family of Ya`qub was envyf or Yusuf when they heard about the vision from him. So Ya`qub became more gentle towards Yusuf, and he became afraid that he was the one about whom Allah ุนุฒ ูˆุฌู„ specifically sent the revelation regarding the calamity. So his gentleness towards him amidst his brothers intensified. When the brothers of Yusuf saw that Ya`qub had preferred him over them, their [envy] intensified and the calamity began with them. So they plotted and they said: ‘Surely, Yusuf and his brother are more beloved to our father than us, while we are a clan. Surely, our father is in clear error. Kill Yusuf or cast him out to [another] land; the countenance of your father will then be only for you, and after that you will be a righteous people.’ (12:8-9) Meaning, they would repent of it. At that, they said: ‘O our father! Why do you not entrust us with Yusuf while surely we are sincere counselors to him? Send him with us tomorrow that he may eat well’ (12:11-12). So Ya`qub said: ‘Surely, it saddens me that you should take him, and I fear that a wolf would eat him.’ (12:13) Ya`qub coddled Yusuf, fearing that the chastisement of Allah would afflict him specifically due to his love for him and the special place in his heart for him. The power, judgment, and order of Allah regarding Ya`qub, Yusuf and his brothers succeeded, and Ya`qub was not able to deflect the calamity from himself or from Yusuf or his sons. So he gave him to them, and because of that, he begrudgingly expected Allah’s chastisement to come down in Yusuf. When they left their house, he caught up to them, took him from them, embraced him, weeped, and gave him back to them. So they quickly took him, fearing that he would take him from them and not give him back to them. They brought him to a grove with trees and said: ‘Let us slaughter him, and toss him under this tree, so that a wolf may eat him at night.’ So the eldest of them said: ‘Do not kill Yusuf. Rather, if anything, throw him into the bottom of the pit. A caravan will pick him up.’ (12:10) So they threw him into the pit, and they assumed that he would drown in it. When he was at the bottom of the pit, he called to them: ‘O children of Roumine, give Ya`qub my greeting of peace.’ When they heard his words, some of them said to the others: ‘Do not leave from here until you know that he has died.’ But they did not stop until they returned to their father that night, weeping. They said: ‘O our fahter! Surely, we went racing each other and left Yusuf with our possessions, and a wolf ate him.’ (12:17) When he heard what they said, he returned, wept, and remembered what Allah ุนุฒ ูˆุฌู„ revealed to him about preparing for the calamity. So he became patient, and submitted to the chastisement. So he said to them: ‘Rather, your egos have enticed you to something.’ (12:18) And Allah would not allow Yusuf to be eaten by a wolf before he understood the interpretation of his true vision.” Abu Hamza said: Then, the hadith of `Ali b. al-Husayn ุนู„ูŠู‡ู…ุง ุงู„ุณู„ุงู… ended here. The next day, I came to him and said to him: “May I be your sacrifice! Yesterday, you informed me of a hadith about Ya`qub and his son, then you cut it off. What was the story of the brothers of Yusuf and the story of Yusuf after that?” So he said: “When they awoke, they said: ‘Let us go see what Yusuf’s condition is. Is he dead or is he alive?’ So when they reached the pit, they saw a caravan at the pit. ‘They sent their water drawer, and he let down his bucket.’ (12:19) A boy latched onto the bucket, so he (the water drawer) said to his companions: ‘Good news! Here is a boy.’ (12:19) When he was taken out, the brothers of Yusuf embraced him and said: ‘This is our slave. Yesterday, he fell into this pit, and so we came today to take him out.’ They snatched him from their hands. They said to him: ‘Either you acknowledge that you are our slave so that we may sell you to this caravan, or we will kill you.’ So Yusuf said to them: ‘Do not kill me. Do whatever you wish.’ So they presented him to a caravan and they said: ‘Who would like to buy this slave from us?’ So a man from them bought him with twenty dirhams, and his brothers, ‘concerning him, were satisfied with little’ (12:20). The bedouin that bought him took him to Egypt, and he sold him to a king of Egypt. And that is the saying of Allah ุนุฒ ูˆุฌู„: ‘And the one from Egypt who bought him said to his wife: make his residence comfortable. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we will adopt him as a son.’ (12:21)” So I said to `Ali b. al-Husayn ุนู„ูŠู‡ู…ุง ุงู„ุณู„ุงู…: “How old was Yusuf when they threw him into the pit?” So he said: “He was nine years old.” So I said: “How far was the house of Ya`qub from Egypt?” So he said: “Twelve days of traveling. And Yusuf was one of the most handsome people of his time, so when Yusuf hit puberty, the wife of the king summoned him. He said to her: ‘I seek refuge in Allah. I am from a family that does not fornicate.’ So she closed the door and said: ‘Do not be afraid.’ She embraced him, so he ran to the door and opened it. She followed him, pulled the back of his shirt, took [a part of it] as he ran away. ‘They found her husband at the door. She said: What is the recompense of one who intended evil for your wife except that he be imprisoned or given a painful punishment?’ (12:25) The king became angry at Yusuf and wanted to punish him. So Yusuf said to him: ‘By the God of Ya`qub! I did not want to commit evil to your wife. Rather, ‘it was she who sought to seduce me’ (12:26) so ask this child which of us is guilty.’ She had a young relative visiting her, so Allah caused the child to speak to give a ruling; he said: ‘O king! Look at the shirt of Yusuf: if it is torn from the front, then he is the one who sought to seduce her. If it is torn from behind, then she is the one who tried to seduce him.’ When the king heard the words of the child and what he said, he was very startled. So he took the shirt and looked at it. When he saw that it was torn from behind, he said to her: ‘Surely, it is of the woman’s plot. Surely, your plot is serious.’ (12:28) So he said to Yusuf: ‘Ignore this’ (12:29) and keep this to yourself. Yusuf did not keep it to himself, and he announced it in the city, until some of the women therein said: ‘The wife of al-`Azeez is seeking to seduce her slave boy’ (12:30) So she was informed of that, so she invited them to a gathering with food. ‘She gave every woman a knife and said [to Yusuf]: come out before them. And when they saw him, they greatly admired him and cut their hands’ (12:31) and they said what they said. She said to them: ‘This is the one that was talked about regarding me’, meaning, she loved him. The women left her, and every one of them went to him without their husband’s knowledge asking him to visit them. So he rejected them and said: ‘Surely, if You do not avert me from their plot, I might incline toward them and be of the ignorant.’ (12:33) So Allah averted them from their plot. When Yusuf’s case became popular, and the case of the wife of al-`Azeez and the women of Egypt, the king, after having took the advice of the child, decided to imprison Yusuf. So he imprisoned him in a prison. Two young men entered the prison with him, and their story was narrated by Allah in His Book along with the story of Yusuf. In Tafsir `Ali b. Ibrahim: My father narrated to me from one of his companions who raised it. He said: Abu `Abdillah ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู… said: “When she was tempted by him, and he was tempted by her, she went to the idol in her house and cast a thin garment over it. So Yusuf said to her: ‘What are you doing?’ She said: ‘I have cast a garment over this idol so that it may not see me, for I am embarrassed from it.’ So Yusuf said: ‘You are embarrassed from an idol that does not hear nor sees. Should I not be embarrassed from my Lord?’ So he ran, and she grabbed him from his back. Then, al-`Aziz came to them at this moment, and that is the saying of Allah: ‘They both raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back, and they found her husband at the door.’ (12:25) So the wife of al-`Aziz instigated and said: ‘What is the recompense of one who intended evil for your wife but that he be imprisoned or a painful punishment?’ (12:25). So Yusuf said to al-`Aziz: ‘It was she who sought to seduce me. And a witness from her family testified.’ (12:26) So Allah ุนุฒ ูˆุฌู„ to Yusuf, instructing him to say to the king: ‘Ask this child in this cradle, for he will bear witness that she sought to seduce me.’ So al-`Aziz asked the child, and Allah caused the child to speak in the cradle to Yusuf until he said: ‘If his shirt is torn from the front, then she has told the truth, and he is of the liars. But if his shirt is torn from the back, then she has lied, and he is of the truthful.’ (12:26-27) So when al-`Aziz saw that the shirt of Yusuf was torn from the back, he said to his wife: ‘Surely, it is of the woman’s plot. Surely, your plot is serious.’ (12:28) Then, he said to Yusuf: ‘Ignore this. And [my wife], ask forgiveness for your mistake. Surely you were of the mistaken.’ (12:29)”
