He said: I asked Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู about the saying of Allah ุนุฒ ูุฌู, “And Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?” (89:10). Why was he called owner of the stakes? So he said: Because when he would torture a man, he would spread him out on the earth upon his face, and stretch his arms and legs, and pierce them with four stakes in the earth. Sometimes, he would spread him over a flat piece of wood, pierce his arms and legs with four stakes, and leave him like that until he dies. I will give an example that will suffice, God-willingly, and it is the saying of Allah ุนุฒ ูุฌู regarding Ibrahim ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู , when he said, “I am going to my Lord” (37:99). Going to his Lord means going toward worshiping Him and striving for Him. Do you not see that its interpretation is different from its [literal] revealed [meaning]? And He said, “He has sent you with eight kinds of cattle” (39:6), and He said, “He has sent you iron, wherein is great might” (57:25) – He sent these through His creation. And it is like His saying, “If the Beneficent had a son, I would be the foremost worshiper” (43:81), meaning [the foremost] of those who strive. So the interpretation of this saying is different from what is apparent.

In Tafsir `Ali b. Ibrahim: Regarding His saying, “And brought, that Day, is Hell. That Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance?” (89:23). He said: My father narrated to me from `Amr b. `Uthman from Jabir from Abu Ja`far ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู .
He said: When this verse, “And brought, that Day, is Hell” (89:23) was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู was asked about that, so he said: The Trustworthy Spirit informed me that when Allah – and there is no god except Him – raises the creation, and brings the firsts and the lasts together, He will bring forth Hell, which be steered by one thousand reins, and each rein will be held by one thousand rough, severe angels. It has a clunk, rage, a wail, and a howl. It wails with a wail. Had Allah not delayed them for the Judgment, it would have consumed everything. Then, a flare will emerge from it that will surround the creatures, both the righteous and the transgressor.
Allah has not created a servant from the servants of Allah, nor an angel, nor a prophet, except that he will call out: “My self, my self!” But you, O Prophet of Allah, will call out: “My Umma, my Umma!” Then, a Path will be placed upon it that is thinner than a hair and sharper than a sword. There will be three arches upon it: the first will be safety and mercy, the second will be prayer, and the third will be the justice of the Lord of the Worlds, there is no god except Him. They will be made to pass upon it, then safety and mercy will trap them. If they overcome that, then prayer will trap them. If they overcome that, then the end is to the Lord of the Worlds, and that is His saying, “Surely, your Lord is in observation” (89:14). The people will be upon the Path, and they will hang from it with the hand, and the foot will slip, so they will cling [to it] by the foot. The angels around it will call: “O Forebearing One! Forgive, and fulfill Your promise, by Your grace! Give peace, give peace.” The people will fall into the Fire like a moth. If a person is saved by mercy and passes through it, he will say: “Praise be to Allah, and by His blessing, good works are fulfilled and good deeds are purified. Praise be to Allah, who saved me from you after despair by His favour and His grave. Surely, our Lord is Forgiving and Thankworthy.”

In `Ilal ash-Shara’i`: By its isnad to al-Hasan b. `Abdillah from his fathers from his grandfather al-Hasan b. `Ali b. Abi Talib ุนูููู ุงูุณูุงู from the Prophet ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู, in a long hadith in which [he replied to] one of the Jews asked him questions: The Sun, at its meridian point (zawal), has a circle that it enters. When it enters it, and reaches its meridian, everything beneath the Throne glorifies and praises my Lord ุฌู ุฌูุงูู, and it is the moment in which my Lord blesses [me]. So Allah ุนุฒ ูุฌู obligated my Umma to pray therein, and He said, “Establish prayer at the decline of the Sun [from its meridian] until the darkness of the night” (17:78). And that is the moment that Hell will be brought forth on the Day of Resurrection. There is not a believer who agrees to prostrate, bow, or stand [in prayer] in that moment except that Allah ุนุฒ ูุฌู prohibits the Fire from his body.

In Majma` al-Bayan:
“And brought, that Day, is Hell” (89:23) And it is reported in a marfu` manner from Abu Sa`eed al-Khudri that he said: When this verse was revealed, the face of the Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู definitively changed [in colour or expression], until his companions became worried over the condition that he was in. One of them went to `Ali b. Abi Talib ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู and said: O `Ali! We saw something happen to the Prophet of Allah. So `Ali ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู embraced him from behind him, kissed him between his shoulders, then said: O Prophet of Allah! May my mother and my father be sacrificed for you! What happened today? He said: Gabriel came to me and recited, “And brought, that Day, is Hell” (89:23). He said: So I said: What will come with it? He said: Seventy thousand will come with it, steering it with seventy thousand reins. If it were left alone, it would have burned everyone. Then, I will be brought in front of Hell, and it will say: What do I have to do with you, O Muhammad, for Allah has prohibited your flesh upon me. And no one will be left unless they say: “My self, my self!”, but Muhammad will say, “My Umma, my Umma!”

So he said: Silence, silence, may Allah cause you to die, O slave, O traitor. So `Ali ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู said to me: Be quiet, O Salman. In Majma` al-Bayan:
As for the recitation that puts a fat`ha in yu`adhab and yuthaqu, a report was narrated from Abu Qilaba that he said: He recited to me from the recitation of the Messenger of Allah ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุขูู, “On that day, none will be punished [as severely] as his punishment, and none will be bound as severely as his binding” (89:25-26). And the meaning is that no one will be punished with the same punishment as this disbeliever whom we have mentioned specifically, or the punishment of this category of disbelievers, and they are the ones mentioned in His saying, “You do not honour the orphan” (89:17) to the rest of the verses.
Translator note: These narrations indicate that these two words in the verse may have originally contained a fat`ha rather than a kasra, which make the verbs majhool. This changes the meaning of the verse, and can therefore refer to a person being punished and not the Lord’s punishment.

In al-Kafi: Several of our ocmpanions from Sahl b. Ziyad from Muhammad b. Sulayman from his father from Sadeer as-Sayrafi.
He said: I said to Abu `Abdillah ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู : May I be your sacrifice, O son of the Messenger of Allah! Does the believer dislike the taking of his soul? He said: No, by Allah. When the Angel of Death meets him to take his soul, he will be alarmed by it. So the Angel of Death will tell him: “O friend of Allah! Do not be alarmed, for by the One who sent Muhammad, I will be better and more compassionate to you than a merciful parent. Open your eyes and see.” He said: Then, the Messenger of Allah, Amir al-Mu’mineen, Fatima, al-Hasan al-Husayn, and the Imams from their progeny ุนูููู ุงูุณูุงู will appear unto him. It will be said to him: “This is the Messenger of Allah, Amir al-Mu’mineen, Fatima, al-Hasan, al-Husayn, and the Imams ุนูููู ุงูุณูุงู , your friends.” So his eyes will be opened, and he will see. Then, his soul will be called to by a caller from the direction of the Lord of Glory, and he will say: “O soul that is reassured with Muhammad and his Ahl al-Bayt, return to your Lord, well-pleased by the wilaya and pleasing by good deeds. Enter upon My servants – meaning, Muhammad and his Ahl al-Bayt – and enter My Paradise.” So nothing will be more beloved to him than the transition of his soul and following the call.
